Make Tala Green Again

Silas Tree project

Our mission is to plant trees to fight draught, climate change and make our society greener again.

Planting trees for life

How we work

Silas Orumba is dedicated to treeplanting in Tala and Machakos south of Nairobi in Kenya. Plants are bought from local nurseries and planted in schools, farms and public areas. The vision of the project is also to engage schoolchildren in planting activities. For trees to survive, they need water. Focus will therefore also be on water harvesting.

Use agricultural and food waste!

Create and teach composting

Much organic material from agricultural harvests and from food waste can be used for creating composts.

New gutters

Water harvesting

In the rainy season much of the water just flows away. A lot of water can be collected from roofs. Matuu Estate primary school has many buildings but did not have proper gutters or no gutters at all. They have got 5 tanks from a donor, but no pipes to fill them. So we started to set new gutters that were connected to one of the tanks at the end of one building. Now we want to do the same with the other buildings. The collected water will be used for watering of trees and vegetables during the dry season.
